Student art on display

MU students have been getting creative outside the classroom, whether it's through music, art, photography or film. That's why the Student Service Center decided to start up the MU Student Art project, to allow our students to show off their stuff on campus! The first exhibition, now on view in the library, features paintings and photographs taken by three of our most talented budding artist: BBA students Mona Kulekov, Kathrin Hanzl and Laura Peez.

Mona Kulekov's 'Headless enjoyment'

Inspired by music videos, American cinema and 1960s pop art, Mona began creating art while attending painting school in Vienna. Encouraged by her teacher, she pursued her interest in the reduction of stereotypes, especially American, and drew on her experiences traveling in the U.S. Moved by her love of journeys, and the enigma of the alternately lonely and neon American landscape, Mona plays with the idea of the “hidden human presence” in this and other works. The reduction to stereotypes, the use of bright colors and close attention to background music while painting allow her to snatch a feeling from fairytales, daydreams, and hidden imagination.

“There is no visible human presence here, just that loneliness and a bare, almost frozen world – a headless enjoyment.”

Ms. Hanzl, a native of Vienna, bought her first, “not quite professional,” camera in 2008 and has been enamored with the art of photography ever since. Drawing on her travels around the globe, she’s passionate about capturing her impressions of favorite themes - especially sights, nature and children. Kathy, who moonlights as a radio host and event moderator, has come a long way from her first amateur device and now uses a professional camera for her work, but she has retained her old affections and brings a classic touch in black and white to her preferred scenes.
