Prof. Josef Mazanec joins MU

MODUL University Vienna proudly announces that Josef Mazanec, Distinguished Professor and outstanding member of the tourism research community, has joined the faculty of MODUL University Vienna as of fall 2010.
Professor Mazanec started his academic career as Assistant Professor at the Institute of Advertising and Market Research at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU). From 1971-1981, he was a member of the European Association of Advertising Agencies. Subsequently, Prof. Mazanec served as the head of the Institute for Tourism and Leisure Studies (WU) from 1981-2010. In 1992, he was a visiting scholar at the Alfred P. Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Alongside his flourishing academic career, he participated as a board member of the Association Internationale d'Experts Scientifiques du Tourisme (AIEST) from 1984-1994, a member of the Tourist Research Centre, and is a founding member of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism (IAST). In addition, Prof. Mazanec was a member of the Travel and Tourism Research Association, the American Marketing Association, and the American Marketing Academy. From 1981-1997, he held the position of Vice-President of the Austrian Society of Applied Research in Tourism. Also notable is his work as associate editor of the Annals of Tourism, a premier journal in tourism research.
During the period of 1996-2000, he was a researcher and editor for Europe of Tourism Analysis, which complements his positions as editorial board member of Tourism Economics; the Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing; the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management; the Journal of Modelling in Management; and the Journal für Betriebswirtschaft. Prof. Mazanec was chief coordinator of the Special Research Program (SFB010) on “Adaptive Systems and Modelling in Economics and Management Science” from 1997-2000. In addition, from 1997-2002, he was Vice-Rector for Research at WU.
Josef’s main research interests are in the areas of hospitality and tourism management, models of consumer & tourist behavior, strategic marketing and strategic planning, multivariate methods and neurocomputing, decision support systems, and management science applications to travel & tourism.
At MODUL University Vienna, Professor Mazanec teaches the courses “International Destination Management” in the MSc in International Tourism Management and “Tourism Marketing Intelligence” in the MBA in Tourism Management study programs. It is an invaluable asset having Josef Mazanec as a member of MODUL University’s research team, and his expertise will be highly appreciated when the university implements its plans to introduce a cutting-edge PhD program in the near future.
