MU Hotel Club – “A club for students by students”
May 18, 2011
Encouraged to put theory into practice, three MU students recently took it upon themselves to start up a club relevant to their studies on Kahlenberg.
They had this to say about their new venture:
''Three MU students, Roxane Braun, Thomas Kuchling and Edward Rowley, developed and implemented an idea to combine the theoretical input of our classes with real-life examples and experiences. The Hotel Club gives students a behind-the-scenes sneak peak at Vienna’s hotels, to be able to gain practical insight in the hospitality industry.
We, as the MU Hotel Club Team, organize excursions for our 15 club members to various types of hotels to better understand and compare different operations, various types of the “back of house” areas, and controversial hotel concepts. For us it is very important that the tours are not the usual sales tours to the lobby and the rooms, but show students an in-depth “backstage” view from the schnitzel frying in the hotel’s kitchen, to the linen being changed in the rooms. As the MU Hotel Club is a club for students by students, the members are actively engaged and involved in the club’s formation and organization.
Our first tour took place on April 27th and brought us to the InterContinental Vienna. It was a special pleasure for us that the Hotel Manager himself, Mr Thomas Legner, guided us through the whole hotel and was open and happy to answer any of our questions. Moreover, we had the opportunity to see daily operations in the banqueting kitchen, the housekeeping floor pantries, and the laundry area.
For our second tour on May 13th, we went to the Boutique Hotel Stadthalle. It was highly interesting for us to learn about their strong and consistent focus on sustainability in all their service operations and architectural design. Ms Tina Seitner from the marketing department showed us around and explained how the Boutique Hotel Stadthalle succeeded in constructing a zero-energy-balance building, why lavender works as a natural air conditioner for the rooms, and how guests could cruise around the city without leaving any carbon footprint.
We hope that with the successful launch of the Hotel Club, it will live on with the students in the years to come.''
