'Mohammed! You're offsides!' - MU takes silver in charity football tournament

After a blazing week of temperatures exceeding 30 degrees, the weather took a turn for the wet last Saturday morning. Nevertheless, eight intrepid Modulians scoffed at the dark clouds and headed out to get their sport on – for a good cause, of course. The tournament was to benefit various charities helping refugee asylum seekers in Austria.

As part of the MU Cares program, six teams gathered at Fußball Platz St. Andrä-Wördern to duke it out for first place on the (slightly damp) field for a tournament held in honour of World Refugee Day. Up against teams from Caritas, Future St. Andrä-Wördern, FC Grenzenlos, ÖJAB Haus Greifenstein, and Pfadfinder, MU’s co-ed, seven-nation army suited up and donned their cleats for an exciting day of offence/defence.

MU’s red-clad unit had a solid group stage, including a win over favourites and co-hosts FC Grenzenlos, a team made up of refugee asylum seekers. Guided by soon-hoarse coach Jesse Alexander shouting encouraging words from the sidelines, MU won their group stage and made it to a final rematch with FC Grenzenlos.

With the sky clearing and temperatures rising, the home team managed a valiant comeback after their first round defeat and edged out MU 2-1 in the nail-biter finale. MODUL University Vienna is now home to the second place trophy from the tournament, a fine showing for our sporting students!

Congratulations to Simon Hala, Saba Siradze, Tomas Glantschnig, Cindy Hörtnagl Vonblon, Leo Spiegelfeld, Mohammed Al Sabagh, Sebastian Harding, and Yankuba Gassama for their football skills and participation, and thanks to the Hala Family for lending the team their bus!
