MODUL Career at the Sterne Awards
April 15, 2013
The Sterne Awards, an annual hotel industry awards presentation, were held in Vienna on Monday, April 8th. Presented in the elegant Alte Börse (Old Stock Exchange) in Vienna’s first district, the MODUL Career team of Hani El-Sharkawi and Ayse Kocakulah was on hand to honor the ‘shining stars’ of the Austrian hotel landscape. Mr. El-Sharkawi also served on the jury this year judging this year’s theme: Sustainability as a Central Point.
The Sterne Awards are well respected in the hotel industry, with each year stressing excellence in a different aspect of hotel management. This year’s theme dovetailed with MU’s mission of sustainability in tourism, making our participation as an academic partner especially fitting. Nine awards are given out (one for each province of Austria), on the basis of the accumulation of points in various areas of sustainability, such as solar panels and thermal heating.
The evening was not only awards, but also a meeting of the minds of hotel industry leaders, sharing ideas and experiences of their time in the industry and an opportunity to look towards the future together. This point was brought home further in speeches and appearances by the Austrian and Vienna Chambers of Commerce, charging the crowd with their impassioned soliloquies.
This event and many more are part of MODUL Career’s continuing presence in the hotel industry as well as indicative of MU’s forward-thinking mission of promoting not only sustainability, but excellence within the hotel and tourism industries. We hope to see our alumni and future graduates on the podium in the years to come!
