Experiencing the world at International Day

MU’s annual International Day is one of the most anticipated events of the year, and the 4th annual edition certainly didn’t disappoint. Under the theme ‘Experience the World’, visitors could take a trip around the globe at booths from China, India, Slovakia, Austria, Romania, Croatia, South Korea, Ukraine, Luxemburg, the USA, Hong Kong, Palestine, and Columbia, and watch a Bollywood-style Indian dance, a middle eastern sword dance, and a multi-lingual performance by the MU Choir.

Visitors could sample chap chae noodles from Korea, Slovakian smoked string cheese, a pulled pork sandwich from the Americans, and head over to Columbia for an empanada – and that’s just the first course!

In addition to delicious food, many stands had activities to showcase their cultures. At the Indian booth, a henna artist was inking the original ‘temporary tattoos’ on visitor with the precise hand needed to create the intricate designs of the traditional body decoration, Hong Kong had a paper ‘wish tree’ to paste your hopes and dreams on, and a face painter was on hand to paint your flag of choice on your cheek.

This year’s winner of the judges’ award for best booth went to home country Austria, who took a thematic approach to their cuisine and offered up a variety of pastries, cakes and patisseries under the motto ‘Sweet Austria’.  Visitors could also try their hand at naming the Austrian celebrities in a large photo collage while nibbling on Sacher torte and apple strudel.

The popular vote for Best Booth went to China for the second year in a row – two large, colourful dragon heads certainly make an impression!

It was the most successful year to date for our charity partner - €2000 was raised for Patenschaft Ecuador, a non-profit organization which builds schools for underprivileged children in Ecuador.

A new addition to the International Day festivities, the Scholarship of Hope for the best student ideas in sustainability was awarded to MSc student Jelena Siric for her green-thinking proposals 'Backyard Composting at Modul University' and 'Spring Cleaning Auction'.

Many thanks to our sponsors Weingut Wolff, 25 Hours Hotel, Brauunion Österreich, Concept Solutions, Coca-Cola, Holiday Inn, Erste Bank and the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
