College Counselor Fly-In 2012

MODUL University Vienna is a great place to study – and now 13 more college counselors know why. For the second annual counselor fly-in, MU invited the diverse group from international high schools in Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Serbia, Belgium, Turkey, China, and Hungary.

From May 2nd-3rd and 9th-10th, the selected representatives got to experience MU and Vienna firsthand, in order to better inform their students about their post-secondary education opportunities.

Blessed with fabulous weather for both weeks’ fly-ins, the two-day packed program began with a tour and introduction to MODUL University Vienna, led by various staff and faculty members who explained our many services. After meeting University President Karl Wöber, the counselors were informed about the study programs, Student Service Centre’s community-building activities, MODUL Career’s internship and job platform to help Modulians along their way and after graduation, and the admissions process.

The info session at the university was followed by a tour of our sister school MODUL Tourism College, a buffet lunch cooked and served by MODUL students, and a wine and cheese tasting to get the counselors acquainted with local production and sommelier recommendations for pairing and wine enjoyment. The parade of Austrian culinary delights didn’t stop there; the first day was bade farewell at Plachutta, one of the city’s top restaurants famous for outstanding ‘Tafelspitz’ and ‘Wiener Schnitzel’.

Day two of the fly-in introduced our guests to the city of Vienna, recently rated the 5th best student city in the world by QS World University Rankings. The morning started off with a visit to Relachs boutique to meet one of MU’s success stories, Modul University BBA ’10 and entrepreneur Susanne Rank. She sells imported Norwegian salmon and French champagne and prosecco to customers in Austria and internationally both from her storefront and online, and the counselors were able to sample Susanne’s fine products in a private visit.

Full of salmon and champagne, the party was then treated to a bus tour of Vienna’s highlights such as the beautiful Ringstraße boulevard and Schönbrunn palace, all the while being informed by MU’s ‘official’ tour guide, Alexandra.

Sunshine led the way for a light lunch in the tree-covered guest garden of the Glacis Beisl in Museums Quartier, and then on to yet another highlight, a visit to the prestigious Hotel Sacher in the heart of Vienna. MODUL school and MU maintain very strong ties, which is beneficial for our students in landing good internships and eventually excellent careers. The Hotel Sacher is owned by an MODUL school alumnus, and a few of selected MU students have worked its glamorous halls. The hotel tour wowed our guests with its elaborate dining rooms, when-can-I-move-in-here suites, and of course, their famous chocolate cake, the ‘Sacher Torte’.

In the only capital city in the world boasting serious wine production within city limits, what better place to top off the extravaganza than with a goodbye dinner at a local ‘heuriger’ or wine tavern in the hills near MODUL University, with authentic Austrian food, wine, music, and dress (oh yes, there was Lederhosen).

Both the invitees and hosts had a splendid time, and we look forward to version 2013! You can check out our photo album on Facebook – don’t forget to become a Fan!
