Alumni Spotlight – Daniel Rüscher, BBA '12
February 28, 2013
Daniel Rüscher has been busy since receiving his MU diploma last July - he landed a great job in a 5-star hotel in Shanghai, and is gearing up to further his studies in Canada this September.
Daniel shared his international success story with us and his plans for the future:
''It has been a bit more than half a year since I graduated from MODUL University, and looking back I can proudly say that the three years atop Kahlenberg were absolutely amazing. From the learning environment to all the people I have met and am still in contact with, these were three years well spent!
In my 4th Semester I looked around for internships, but had problems finding one. However, with the help of Hani El Sharkawi at MODUL Career, I landed an internship at a beautiful property of one of the biggest hotel companies worldwide – The Hyatt on the Bund, Shanghai. Six months of intense food and beverage training gave me a deep understanding of the F&B streams, within a very reputable 5-Star MICE hotel (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) in China. Fast paced and non-stop!
I came back to Vienna to complete my last year, write my thesis, and in the meantime trying to decide on what I wanted to do after graduation. There was a lot of back and forth, but in the end I decided to gain more work experience before going on to do my Master’s degree.
With my BBA in Tourism & Hospitality Management in my hand, I got a job as an Event Coordinator for the Kerry Hotel Shanghai. Within two years, the Kerry Hotel Shanghai, a 5–star lifestyle MICE hotel and a sister company of the Shangri-la Hotels and Resorts, and the Traders Hotels, has gained a reputation like no other. In 2012 it was voted as the best MICE Hotel in China.
I organize everything for events from cocktail receptions to groups that need over 300+ room nights and meeting spaces. Furthermore, I am in charge of all internal events and work closely with Food & Beverage Marketing to create social events tailored to the big and diverse international community, Shanghai governmental chambers, and events for our loyalty program members.
I have learned so much in the past half year that I felt ready to apply to various universities for a Master’s program, where I can actively contribute in the classroom with all the intercultural work experiences I have had in the past years.
And, it worked! Beginning in September, I will pursue the Master’s in Global Business at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria, Canada, in which nine months of the twelve-month program are spent on three different continents in order to gain first hand insight into how business is done globally.
I can confidently say that that my BBA from MODUL University Vienna has played a big role in landing these positions, and has given me the opportunity to excel in what I want to do, and it is here where I want to express my biggest thanks to everyone involved!''
